Can I please just talk about this small moment that takes place before the core transfer scene, right after the Announcer declares that GLaDOS is corrupt? Because I’ve been wanting to for a while now. This is just a little something I noticed during one of my playthroughs, but did anyone else pay attention to how quickly GLaDOS darts to the side (the first time to face you) when Wheatley announces, "Do what it says, plug me in!"
It’s her animation for when she says "Do NOT plug that little idiot into MY mainframe." and also for "Don’t you DARE plug him in."
It caught me by surprise when I first noticed it, because the entire scene she moves around so smoothly. One of my favorite things about GLaDOS is how gracefully she moves around, I mean just look at her:
Not to mention you have a robot of that SIZE moving so quickly you can hardly even catch the actual movement in the first gif. I’s pretty insane.
So for her to just have this violent jerk to the side when she says that genuinely caught me off guard because it’s such a huge difference compared to how she is animated the majority of the time; not to mention it even adds to the change in mood when you start building up to the core transfer scene. I mean, I’ve mentioned before how even in dire situations, GLaDOS almost always maintains such a calm demeanor; in her voice and in her body language. It has nothing to do with her being a robot, we’ve seen how emotional she can get when pushed to extremes, (Wheatley is one too and he couldn’t be more opposite from her) it’s because she’s just like that. It’s how she is. And when GLaDOS strays from that collected, composed nature, it’s pretty scary, because you know something beyond serious is going on. I stress the word beyond, because even when she realizes that you’ve gone and sabotaged her, her response is a simple, ”Oh. You were busy back there.” You’ve just taken away one of the two main weapons she can use against you, but she doesn’t falter, because even though what just happened is pretty serious, she knows she still has the situation under control. She (thinks) she still has her neurotoxin, and Chell is currently trapped in a glass box with no way to portal out whatsoever. Then suddenly killing you with neurotoxin is out of the equation, and her murderer breaks out of the glass container she’d captured her in. She knows it’s bad, but other than having nothing to kill you right away with, she has no reason to be panicked yet. The danger level is dramatically rising for her, but she IS the facility. There is still a slim chance to be able to gain an upper hand somewhere in this.
And then it’s announced that she’s corrupt - and the system is suggesting that a core transfer be executed. She knows what that means, she knows what will be done to her if a core transfer takes place, and there is a very, very high change that one is about to happen.
The tables have turned completely. All odds are against her now. She isn’t in control anymore, and she’s scared, and in those split seconds that calm demeanor of hers just cracks.
aagh GLaDOS. :( this is great though man I never noticed that, wow…
